8 Of The Best Chinese Restaurants To Chow Down At In London
"This modern Chinese restaurant on Broadwick Street, slickly designed and eagerly staffed, is a great option for all-day dim sum year round, and their seven-dish Chinese New Year menu (on ’til March 4) is pretty special. The sesame balls filled with a salted egg-yolk custard are a real treat, the braised pork is ludicrously tender and melty, and the golden fortune prawns are mouthwatering too. The cocktails we tried were just the ticket to sharpen the senses (the Black River Martini is a punchy, purple Scotch + blackberry delight) and although I wasn’t wholly sold on the admittedly very pretty petit gateau that concluded the meal, my companion eagerly demolished both of ours, so what do I know?"

London’s best Chinese restaurants
"For truly excellent dim sum in a sleek, stylish setting, there are few places in London that match contemporary tea room Yauatcha. Yet another standout Asian offering from Alan Yau (Hakkasan, The Duck And Rice, Wagamama and more), after opening in 2004, Yauatcha was awarded a Michelin star and has held onto it ever since. Located on the corner of Broadwick Street in Soho (although there’s also a newer, City outpost), passers-by line up to stare through the blue glass walls at the rows of picture-perfect patisseries."

The best restaurants with a view in London
"Sitting on level 33, Hutong is the highest of the restaurants in the Shard. Hutong showcases the very best of northern Chinese cuisine and culture, with its stylish interior sporting traditional red lanterns, hand-carved ‘Moon Gates’, silk curtains and epic views over London, a menu based on the ‘Lu school’ cuisine of China’s Shandong Province and cocktails inspired by ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine. While all of the restaurants in the Shard certainly come with an inflated price tag, popping in for a cocktail and small bite could still prove better value than forking out £32 for a ticket to ‘The View from The Shard’ viewing platform."

"They do say heat rises: Chinese restaurant Hutong is for thrill-seekers who love a bit of spice with their heights. Positioned on the 33rd level of The Shard – London’s tallest building by quite a stretch – a night at Hutong comes with a view of pretty much the entire city and its twinkling lights, as well as fiery pepper-packed Sichuan dishes. Head one level down at the Shard and you’ll find Aqua Shard and Oblix, a duo of restaurants with similarly stunning views and a little less numbing of the tongue."

"Restaurants Contemporary Asian London Bridge. Like the original Hutong in Hong Kong, this offshoot halfway up the Shard is a glitzy rendezvous with amazing views, ersatz Old Beijing decor and a Sichuan-Northern Chinese menu. Tuned-in service and high prices come with the territory, but Hutong is a City date restaurant par excellence serving carefully rendered, offbeat food that’s guaranteed to jangle and soothe curious palates."

"The Xi’an Chinese cooking that has made chef Wei Guirong — an alumnus of Sichuanese restaurant Barshu in Chinatown—a star of London dining, is now at home in Bloomsbury. Master Wei is Guirong’s first solo project — following her joint venture, Xi’an Impression by the Emirates Stadium in Highbury, a tiny restaurant which has rightly earned cult status among lovers of regional Chinese food in the capital. At Master Wei the focus is on the region’s flour-foods, mianshi: peerless biang biang noodle dishes, with vegetables or beef and hot chilli oil; fine liang pi, cold skin noodles with a cool, refreshing, umami rich dressing, and the chef’s inimitable “burgers” with a cumin-spiced beef or pork filling."

London’s best Chinese restaurants
"China’s Uyghur population – increasingly persecuted in China itself – have a cuisine so unique and delicious that it is worth travelling to Walthamstow just to try it (and we don’t say that lightly). The one true outpost of their food in London, Uyghur cuisine sits at the intersection of Middle Eastern and Chinese cooking, bringing in familiar ways of cooking with brand-new flavours or familiar ingredients in ways you’re not used to seeing. Etles serves up all the classics of their cuisine, but the menu is not gospel: there are other dishes you might see coming out to other tables who are more familiar with Uyghur food."

"Chef-owner Mukaddes Yadikar’s acclaimed Uyghur restaurant, is Walthamstow’s finest neighbourhood restaurant. A great option both for smaller and larger households with dishes such as chaomian, a stir-fry of short, cut lengths of noodle wokked with chunks of of beef, spring onion and tomato; and the trademark da pan ji (‘big plate chicken’): a remarkably deep, savoury, and spicy chicken and potato stew, teeming with Sichuan peppercorns, served with flat hand-pulled noodles."

"Restaurants Chinese Walthamstow. Something a bit different: this family-run restaurant specialises in Uyghur cuisine – a fusion of Chinese, Middle Eastern and Persian influences developed by ethnic groups around the Silk Road. Traditional dishes such as ox tongue in chilli and vinegar or herb-marinated lamb hoof with peppers are great value – and a world away from sweet-and-sour."

"If only all watering holes were like this lively Chinese restaurant-meets-pub, where the beer is fresh and unpasteurised and the bar snacks include a delightful array of dim sum, from venison puffs to scallop shumai. The informal yet sumptuously decorated two floor venue on Berwick Street (Soho) is from the king of London’s trendy Chinese food scene Alan Yau – the man behind Yauatcha and Hakkasan. The great thing about the menu here is that, while it’s Chinese food done properly, there are also plenty of takeaway classics to appease us boring Brits, with the comforting inclusion of classics like sesame prawn toast and chicken in black bean sauce."
