"In 1012 he was martyred by the Danes at Greenwich when he refused to pay a ransom for his release. The church was built around 1013. It was demolished in the 16th century, rebuilt in the 17th, escaped the Great Fire, was destroyed and rebuilt in 1777, and finally pulled down in 1923, leaving only the porch and part of the Tower standing."
