London's best bakeries - where to buy bread, pastries, buns and more...
"One doughnut spot that’s on every Londoner’s lips is Crosstown Doughnuts, known for their wild and wacky flavour combinations. From cinnamon scrolls to matcha tea, peach and nectarine to yuzu and passionfruit, there’s a doughnut to fit every taste bud. You’ll know when you spot someone munching into one of their doughnuts because you can spot their trademark ‘x’ piped onto the corner."
"Soft and dense like cake, full of banana flavour – in the dough and icing – plus a filling of chunky cherry compote all the way round, Crosstown’s new banana cake doughnut is now an unmisseable part of the range."
"Whatever your stance on the croissant-doughnut hybrid, you've got to admire the dedication to the crodough cause at this E1 institution. They usually have 10 or more flavours on offer — all of them flamboyant, some of them highly controversial (Crème Egg Crodough, we’re looking at you), others fried, layered crowd-pleasers like the Raspberry Crodough. Rinkoff Bakery, 224, Jubilee Street, E1 3BS"
"Feast Your Eyes|Photograph by Maz McEwan | Courtesy of Crosstown Doughnuts. Betsy and Jo, founders of pop-up stand You Doughnut, have perfected the art of the bitesize doughnut, resulting in mouth watering morsels with a choice of toppings and sauces. The doughnuts are always fresh, ensuring that they are consistently delicious."
"Eggslut opened their first London restaurant in Notting Hill and it was a huge hit. This sees them expanding to Fitzrovia where they'll be serving up more of their eggy buns to Londoners."
"Moto will be focusing strongly around sake and other Japanese spirits, aiming to bring lesser-known varieties to London - all paired with bar snacks too."
"Two hip fast-food concepts under one roof, this hybrid from Soho House feeds burger fanatics with highly seasoned patties in glossy brioche buns while chook fans can gnaw on spit-roasted free-range poultry served hot, crisped-up and smoky."
"Well-known for its child-friendly atmosphere, parents can sit back and enjoy their family experience here. Just two minutes from Piccadilly Circus, the restaurant is perfect for a pre or post- theatre dinner with the children. The menu is sure to please the kids, with favourites from pizza to pasta and burgers dominating the menu."
"Inspired by Hollywood glamour, Planet Hollywood aims to make you feel like a star. The London location, in Haymarket by Piccadilly Circus, is full of memorabilia from the biggest blockbusters, including Rocky. Take in the glitzy surroundings and dine on all the American favourites from juicy burgers to Buffalo wings."
"With themed rooms, a huge cocktail bar and classic movie memorabilia, Planet Hollywood London is always a fun choice for a meal out."
"01/06/2021: Visited on a Saturday evening around 7pm with wife and kids as we fancied burgers and this place seemed to have good reviews and was close by.Ordered 3 burgers, 1 portion of loaded fries and some nuggets. Everything is served on grease proof paper which is a bit odd but I guess that’s the vibe.Every single dish was horrid and none of us finished anything. The waiting staff couldn’t care less and didn’t ask at any point during our visit if everything was ok or if we wanted something else.Toilets were actually disgusting. All this for almost £70 too!!"
"Some crave the confit chicken wings, others drool over the rosemary-salted fries, but it’s really about the kookily titled burgers at this bare-bones dude-food joint – anyone for Smokey Robinson or Lambshank Redemption?. Expect neon-lit booths, cult beers, rum punch and long queues. Flagship site: 54 James Street, W1U 1HE"
"When Ghanaians say ‘chalé’ they mean ‘old friend’, and ‘Let’s Eat!. ’ is Alicia Ama’s matey invitation to try some native food from her West African home country. If you want to tread gently, plump for the mild chicken ‘flo’ (in a sweet pepper, tomato and palm fruit stew) but we prefer the more challenging beef azi desi (spicy beef in peanut butter stew with butternut squash and okra) – plus some rice, sticky plantain and anise slaw on the side."
"The last time we went to Riding House Café we bumped into Phoebe Waller-Bridge so that alone is a reason to visit this London institution. Even if the Fleabag star isn't there when you pop in, the breakfasts are worth the trip. From classics such as smashed avocado and buttermilk pancakes to Israeli couscous with coconut yoghurt, the menu is lip-lickingly good."
"When these bad boys cruised past us the other day we felt a stab of jealousy. Three fluffy, melt in the mouth pancakes, served with vanilla clotted cream, blueberries and a jug of maple syrup. Wash them down with one of their killer Bloody Marys."
"Lyle’s offers innovative and experimental plates in the industrial space of Shoreditch’s Tea Building. James Lowe’s delicate and exacting cooking frequently features game and foraged ingredients, always expertly sourced. There is a set menu in the evening, with lunchtime à la carte options including dishes such as mussels with cider and alexanders or mutton cooked over beechwood charcoal."
